No matter how much your goals seem out of reach, never give up.

I took up aerial silks as a new hobby just over a year ago. I wanted a challenge and boy, did I ever get one! I came home from my first lesson, exhilarated, telling my husband, “Wow – it is SO DIFFICULT, but SOOOO much FUN!”

Come to think of it, I’ve probably felt that way during and after every single lesson since.

I struggle with having the flexibility, the upper body strength, and even the courage (I’m very afraid of heights), to do a lot of what this activity requires.

I’ve been practicing the move in this photo for several months and this weekend is the very first time I was able to let go. aerial silks2

Every other time, my left foot didn’t get high enough or the silk under my back was in the wrong place so I couldn’t balance and go no-hands.

And on Saturday, I finally got there – woohoo!

But I wouldn’t have if I just gave up, or my coach gave up on me, after the first…fifth…tenth…twentieth…time I tried.

So remember, no matter what your current goals are…being consistent and persistent is the key to it all.

And if you’re dwelling in self-doubt or lacking confidence that you can achieve your dream, here are five quick tips to get you back on track:

  1. Take a success inventory. That’s right – think about all the times you didn’t think you could do something…and then you did it. You know you have multiple episodes in your life where you rose to the challenge and saw something through. Start focusing on those stories and use them as evidence you can do anything when you put your mind to it.
  1. Get your mind right! And, speaking of putting your mind to it…let’s get real – no one ever experienced any success without overcoming fears and building self-belief. Look at your fears and ask yourself why they’re simply not true (if you’re having trouble with that see #1 above); then ask yourself how you can re-frame the fear and create a new positive belief statement that supports what you want to achieve.
  1. Build your network. Surround yourself with people who support your goals and have a positive influence on your life. As motivational speaker, Jim Rohn, says, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” Are you spending time with people who drag you down or who help lift you up?
  1. Take a step every day towards your goal. Show up every day and even when the mountain seems too steep to climb, just take a small and simple step. When you string a lot of small steps together, you cover a lot of ground. A year from now you’ll look back in amazement at how far you’ve come.
  1. Celebrate the wins. Each evening, take a moment to review the success you’ve had that day. And, I don’t just mean the big wins, like signing the big client or banking that bonus. I mean the small stuff too – remembering to take the trash out or making that phone call you’ve been dreading for the past week. No matter how big or small, take the time to truly acknowledge yourself and what you’re capable of.

You’ve got this.

I believe in you! <3 🙂
