Networking: Heaven or Hell?

Networking…I used to DREAD going to events…the small talk, the cursory exchange of biz cards, the awkward moments where you just feel like everyone is trying to sell each other…can you relate?? UGH!

And here’s the thing – no matter what line of work you’re in, sooner or later you need to network.

Yes, I know LinkedIn allows you to do this from the comfort of your office or couch, but in-person networking still happens and still matters – even if you’re building an online biz in your pajamas!

Let’s face it – if you’re in business you’re always networking (or you should be). Even if you’re not building a biz, sooner or later you’re going to find yourself at a conference or industry-related event, and what then?

For some people, networking is a breeze. They love to meet new people and have the gift of being able to chat casually with anyone. However, for others it can instill feelings of nausea and trepidation.

If you fall into that latter category, you’re definitely not alone, and I’ve been where you are.

But now I absolutely LOVE going to networking events because I totally switched up what I was doing and how I approached it all.

Here’s what I do now and what may be helpful for you, too:

I’m selective about the events I go to. I do my research ahead of time to make sure the group feels good to me and is aligned with my beliefs/philosophies, etc.
I don’t go with the intention of selling my products and services or finding clients. I go with the intention of meeting new people, exploring relationships, and figuring out how I can support fellow entrepreneurs.
Yes, I do exchange business cards, but only after I’ve really chatted with someone (not just small talk) and we both feel there’s a good connection.
I follow up almost immediately to grab a coffee and some one-on-one time so I can begin to build a real relationship.
Once I find a few groups I love, I go consistently, and I get involved in the organization/association. When you serve on the board or offer to help with events, you get to know so many great people on a deeper level.

I don’t think I would have been smiling and having fun at an event like this a year ago! (Yes, I am standing at an awkward angle because I was trying to avoid the edge of the table in my behind – LOL! :-))
